SSL Jargon
There are many different terms and phrases thrown around when you are shopping for a SSL certificate. Below are the meanings to some of the terms that we use.
Domain Validation
This is the most basic form of validation. During the SSL sign up process the domain name owner is verified by contacting the administrative email address on the domain. No further checks are made on the organisation or any physical address. This is the cheapest certificate but also the least trusted.
Organization Validation
When you purchase the this type of SSL certificate the authority (E.G. Verisign) verifies that the domain name you use on the certificate is in fact yours. In addition to this other details are verified such as your name and address (or that of your organisation). This provides additional assurance to your web site visitors that they can trust your content.
Extended Validation (EV)
Extended Validation goes beyond the already extensive checks of organisation validation by verifying the legal existence of your organisation that is registering the certificate. The authority (E.G. Verisign) will also check with your organisation directly if it intended to issue the certificate in question. This validation shows the commitment of your organisation to the importance of the security of customer data and privacy.
Encyption
Encryption is the process that SSL uses to secure data sent between your web server and client web browsers. It ensures that sensitive data such as passwords and credit card numbers can not be intercepted by a third party and read. Encryption is rated by its number of bits; the higher the bits the stronger the encryption and the more secure sensitive data is. For example, 256 bit encryption is much stronger than 128 bit encryption.
Warranty
Some SSL authorities offer a warranty on their SSL. This warranty is designed to protect you from any errors where a certificate is mis-issued to a fraudulent site. In such a case where your visitors lose money due to this error you will be covered by the authority up to the amount advertised for the certificate you purchased. Rest assured that everyone takes great care to make sure that we and the SSL authority issue the certificate to the correct domain and organisation that purchased it.
Green Bar
The green bar is implemented by some modern web browsers that gives a clear indication to visitors that the SSL certificate and the security of your website is trusted by the web browser. This is a convenient and highly visible sign of trust for visitors.
